Food Takes the Spotlight at this year’s Luxembourg Fest

July 23, 2024 by Tara Williams in Uncategorized

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Food Takes the Spotlight at This Year’s Luxembourg Fest

BELGIUM, WISCONSIN, July 23, 2024. If there was a theme for the 38th annual Luxembourg Fest, food would be it. So what types of food are Luxembourgish and what unique culinary delights can our guests expect to experience?

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9:

Our fest weekend kicks off with a Cultural Forum entitled, “Luxembourg Culinary Traditions.” Check-in starts Friday, August 9 at 9:30 am with the forum beginning at 10 am at the Ozaukee Nonprofit Center in Grafton.

Presented by Guy Thewes, director of the Lëtzebuerg City Museum and Villa Vauban, this cultural forum explores the important role food plays in shaping collective identities and how Luxembourg food traditions regarding dishes such as Kachkéis, Kuddelfleck, Kniddelen, Gromperekichelcher, Träipen or the famous Judd mat Gaardebounen got their start.  The conference also looks at eating habits of Luxembourgers from the Middle Ages through today.

The cultural forum is a ticketed event. Registration is $30 for LACS members and $35 for non-members and includes refreshments and conference materials.

Reservations are due here before July 30: https://www.lacs.lu/events/forum-2024/

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10:

Everyone knows the best part of going to a festival is the food and we have lots of authentic Luxembourg foods to try on Fest Grounds (Belgium Community Park-106 Beech Street- FREE ADMISSION FOR ALL) from 11 am- 4 pm Saturday, August 10.

  • Marc Weydert and Nicky Krieger-Loos will be flying in from Luxembourg to prepare Kniddelen (a Luxembourg dumpling) and a Luxembourg dessert.
  • Guests can also try Mettwurst, a Luxembourg sausage specially prepared by Bernie’s meats in Port Washington, and Mustreipen, an immigrant version of the Luxembourg dish treipen, a traditional blood sausage.
  • Kyotes Bar & Grill’s food truck will be making mustreipen puffs and Judd Mat Gaardebounen (smoked pork collar with broad beans)
  • Those brave enough can even participate in the World’s Largest Treipen Eating Contest. (FREE ENTRY).  The contest is at 1 pm Saturday, August 10thand includes both an adult and juniors division.
  • Even though you will be at Luxembourg Fest, it is held in Belgium, Wisconsin, so you can also look forward to the Lion’s Club’s Belgium waffles, served with a generous helping of strawberries and ice cream.
  • Saturday night, August 10this the highlight of Fest weekend- “Luxembourg Under the Stars” (ticketed event- $200 per seat fundraiser with proceeds going to LACS).  This highly anticipated event takes place under the charming tent at the Grand Duke Henri Square in Belgium, just across from the LACS. This event will mark the first collaboration between a chef from Luxembourg (restauranteur Tom Hickey, along with his sister, Adrienne Douglas) and a local restaurant.  Hickey will be collaborating with Rebecca Berkshire, head chef for Lowland’s group and serving a meticulously crafted menu that showcases the finest Luxembourgish products paired with beers, wines, and ciders freshly imported from Ansay International in Port Washington.
  • Hickey’s Luxembourgish brewery, Twisted Cat, will be making its US Debut during Fest. Ansay International will be importing and featuring its Dry Hopped IPA, Pale Ale, and Espresso Stout.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 11:

  • Mustreipen returns to the post-mass menu, served with apple sauce. Fried potatoes and traditional American fare will also be available.
Luxembourg Fest Mass begins at 10 am on Luxembourg Fest grounds.
